Archival Storytelling

Archival Storytelling

$23.99

Archival Storytelling is an essential, pragmatic guide to one of the most challenging issues facing filmmakers today: the use of images and music that belong to someone else. Where do producers go for affordable stills and footage? How do filmmakers evaluate the historical value of archival materials? What do verite’ producers need to know when documenting a world filled with rights-protected images and sounds? How do filmmakers protect their own creative efforts from infringement? Filled with advice and insight from filmmakers, archivists, film researchers, music supervisors, intellectual property experts, insurance executives and others, Archival Storytelling defines key terms-copyright, fair use, public domain, orphan works and more-and challenges filmmakers to become not only archival users but also archival and copyright activists, ensuring their ongoing ability as creators to draw on the cultural materials that surround them. Features conversations with industry leaders including Patricia Aufderheide, Hubert Best, Peter Jaszi, Jan Krawitz, Lawrence Lessig, Stanley Nelson, Rick Prelinger, Geoffrey C. Ward and many others. Additional praise for Archival Storytelling: “Ive been making historical documentaries for many years, yet I learned new things from this book. This is the definitive guide for archival research for documentary filmmakers. An invaluable resource.” -Mark Jonathan Harris, Distinguished Professor, School of Cinematic Arts, University of Southern California, and writer/director, The Long Way Home and Into the Arms of Strangers “One of the best-and most needed-[books] I have seen in a while. The challenge is to keep what is a fairly technical aspect of filmmaking interesting without compromising the quality and depth of information. The authors have done an exceptional job in this regard by the careful interweaving of interviews with researchers, filmmakers and legal experts through the factual materialThere is the strong sense of being in the presence of experienced filmmakers and researchers who accept that while there are standard practices, archival use and intellectual property laws etc. are contingent fields in which each case must be assessed and dealt with on its merits.” -Bruce Sheridan, Chair, Film & Video Department, Columbia College “It’s hard to imagine a more organized, comprehensive dissection of Byzantine material. The authors have produced a tremendous guide for all who use archival resources. Best of all, because of their effort, I believe more individuals will be able to access and properly utilize such material. This book will serve filmmakers and, in turn, the public for years to come.” -Thomas Speicher, Producer, Pennsylvania College of Technology “Not simply a ‘how-to’ manual, it is also a discussion of ideas, issues and history that creates an enjoyable text even when the subject matter becomes complicatedThe real world examples, the roundtable discussions, and the explora

Archival Strategies and Techniques

Archival Strategies and Techniques

"I think that anyone who has an interest in traditional archival research will find this a thoughtful and valuable guide to the many different elements of the research process." –Theory and Methods "His research advice is systematic and thorough and could easily serve for other researchers than sociobiographers. In eighty-eight pages, Hill has managed to pack not only this sound research advice but a critique of archival practices and a six-page bibliography. The book is certainly worth a read. . . . and could give archivists an opportunity to broaden their sociological horizons." –Archivaria "Michael Hill’s monograph, Archival Strategies and Techniques, depicts a world that some might think would be as dusty as old manuscripts themselves, but in the process of describing the excitements, joys, frustrations, and ethical conundrums, he has demonstrated that the archival scholar can share thrills and fears with Indiana Jones. Hill’s book is filled with lively anecdote, compelling analysis and a full measure of wit. This monograph will be an invaluable companion for anyone planning to spend time in libraries, dusty or otherwise." –Gary Alan Fine, University of Georgia "Much more than a how-to book, Michael Hill interprets archives and their use from a Goffmanian sociological perspective. As an extra benefit, he guides readers through the archival process by drawing on a sociological/historical project–the recovery of unknown or presently discounted social scientists. Any teacher who assigns a term paper to students will want to recommend this book " –Shulamit Reinharz, Brandeis University "Michael Hill has produced a lively and, for some of us, comforting guide to archival research insociology. . . . The book is comforting because among the gems contained within this short monograph is a discussion of the need to recover unknown or presently discounted social scientists’ as an important epistemological task." –Network Historical and biographical research is increasingly used by social scientists as an important form of qualitative research. This kind of research usually requires the extensive use of formal archives housed in university and government buildings, museums, and other institutions. This concise, but practical book provides the "rules of the game" for the novice on conducting and preparing to work in archives, the protocol of using archives, and ways of organizing and referencing the useful data from the archive. This intriguing volume will interest scholars and students from a wide array of disciplines using this type of research for social analysis.

Working with Archival Data: Studying Lives

Working with Archival Data: Studying Lives

$6.48

The number of longitudinal data archives is growing almost daily, yet no resource exists to help understand the relationship between research questions and archival data–until now. Drawing on a single project, the Lewis Terman Study at Stanford University, the authors illustrate how to use the model-fitting process to select and fit the right data set to a particular research problem. Employing a step-by-step approach, this handy volume covers the measurement of historical influences, the adaptation of existing coding schemes to temporal patterns that are characteristic of life records, and the recasting of archival materials to illuminate contemporary questions that the data were not designed to answer.

From Polders to Postmodernism: A Concise History of Archival Theory

From Polders to Postmodernism: A Concise History of Archival Theory

$29.48

From Polders to Postmodernism is a broad ranging history of the conception and development of the theories that have guided archivists in their work from the late 19th through the early 21st centuries. Narrated through the controversial thread of archival appraisal theory, the book examines how archivists have engaged with theory through the tension between keeping records that reflect objective history "as it happened" and subjective decision making in the archive. Through an interpretive reading of archival theory, distinct periods emerge, with each paradigm contributing unique responses to difficult archival, historical, and theoretical contexts.

Between the Covers of the Book of Mormon

$29.48

1945. From the Introduction: In this series of stories, we are not primarily concerned with the origin of the Book of Mormon, from whence it came, nor the manner in which it was brought forth. We are, however, at this time vitally interested in what is between its two covers, the stories of the people who lived during the days in which this book was written, as recorded in the Book of Mormon. The story in the Book of Mormon begins in Jerusalem during the first year Zedekiah was king of Judah, about 600 B.C.

A Veteran Angler, Archival Photograph - Seneca Ray Stoddard

A Veteran Angler, Archival Photograph – Seneca Ray Stoddard

$199

A Veteran Angler, ca. 1890 Archival Photograph by photographer Seneca Ray Stoddard archival pigment print on a 13″ x 19″ matte surface paper In addition to the Adirondacks, Stoddard also photographed places where he traveled, such as New York City, the setting for this scene. Seneca Ray Stoddard (1843-1917) is best known for his photographs of the Adirondack region of New York State, but he also was a cartographer, writer, poet, artist, traveler and lecturer. A sign painter by training, he turned to photography in his twenties. From his business base in Glens Falls he carried his cameras throughout the region, capturing the vistas and scenes of Adirondack life. In his time, Stoddard’s photographs served as advertisements for the region, giving vacationers a chance both to preview and to savor their summer experience. Today his photographs document not only the Adirondack wilderness but also the human story of the region. By the late 1860′s, improved methods of travel allowed more and more people to escape the heat of the city and enjoy the cooling environs of the Adirondacks. For those who chose to “rough it” at a hotel, rather than in a tent or cottage, the region boasted accommodations from modest to grand. Hotels served as centers for entertainment, hosting an array of amusing activities that were open to cottage dwellers and campers alike. Boating, fishing, hiking, croquet, and lawn tennis featured prominently in a vacation in the Adirondacks, but hotels also offered less physically demanding activities such as billiards, card games, hops and hayrides. Stoddard also was a passionate writer about his travels in the Adirondacks. In 1872 he began production of a yearly publication, Adirondacks Illustrated, which he revised numerous times. The book, which incorporated Stoddard’s drawings and photographs, served as a guide to the Adirondack region, providing advice for novice wilderness travelers and directing vacationers to the best summer destinations. His tongue-in-cheek perceptions of Adirondack travel and his Mark Twain-style of humor made his guidebooks among the most popular sources of the day. These limited edition reproduction prints, available only through Burke Décor, have been selected from more than 3000 photographs in the S.R. Stoddard Collection owned by the Chapman Historical Museum of Glens Falls, NY. Each has been digitally scanned, retouched to remove dirt and other marks, and carefully optimized to reproduce the tonal quality of Stoddard’s original albumen prints. They are printed on Moab Entrada paper with archival inks to ensure your long-term enjoyment. All prints are editions of 50. Numbered with authentication sheet, Prints will ship approximately 3-5 days from receipt of payment. All prints are archival pigments with a Matte surface; image size printed on 13″ x 19″ paper with a white border. Free shipping throughout the 48 contiguous states.
